We are witnessing the rise of three modern demagogues—Putin, Trump, and Netanyahu—whose actions are reshaping the global order in ways that undermine the principles of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This emerging “new world order†reflects a growing disregard for international norms and accountability.
Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, the UDHR consists of 30 articles that define the basic rights and fundamental freedoms to which every individual is entitled. These rights are recognized as universal, inherent, and inalienable, applying equally to all human beings without exception. Yet today, those foundational principles are increasingly violated, eroding the moral and legal framework intended to protect human dignity worldwide.
Putin seeks to reassert control over countries that were once part of the former Soviet Union, including Ukraine and neighboring states, in an effort to rebuild a sphere of influence rooted in imperial power. Trump has openly expressed ambitions to dominate parts of the Western Hemisphere—such as Greenland, Mexico, the Panama Canal, and even Canada—framing these interests around access to natural resources and strategic geopolitical positioning. Netanyahu pursues control over Gaza and the West Bank, extending claims to surrounding territories under the religious and ideological justification of a “Promised Land.â€
Together, these demagogues demonstrate a shared disregard for national sovereignty and international law, treating independent nations and territories as opportunities for unchecked territorial expansion—a modern form of land grab that undermines the principles of self-determination and global order.
Putin and Netanyahu have employed the full machinery of modern warfare—tanks, aircraft, drones, artillery, and missiles—to devastate cities and critical infrastructure, resulting in the widespread killing of civilians. These campaigns reflect a deliberate strategy of destruction that disregards international humanitarian law and the protection of noncombatants.
Trump, meanwhile, misled the American public by falsely claiming that his reelection would reduce inflation and lower the daily cost of living. He brought Elon Musk directly into the political process, leveraging Musk’s political action committee and vast financial resources, along with support from wealthy allies in Silicon Valley, to flood the election with unlimited money in an effort to secure victory.
Following the election, Trump appointed Musk as a Special Government Employee in a so-called “Doge†role. In this capacity, Musk and his team launched aggressive actions against the federal government, pushing mass firings of federal employees across multiple agencies and levels of government. These actions created widespread confusion and disrupted critical public services and essential government functions.
Together, Trump and Musk engaged in a clear case of state capture—a form of systemic political corruption in which private interests exert disproportionate influence over government decision-making, reshaping public institutions to serve their own economic and political agendas rather than the public good.
